Bombay high court orders CBI probe into Wadala ‘custodial death’
Mumbai: Expressing no confidence in the Mumbai crime branch’s investigation into the alleged custodial death of Wadala youth Agnello Valdaris and the torture and sexual abuse of his three co-accused, the Bombay high court on Tuesday transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A division bench of Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode also directed the director general of police, in the Kandivli custodial death case, to set up a committee to look into the “rising custodial deaths in Maharashtra and suggest remedial measures to stop the gruesome torture of persons who are in custody”.
Maharashtra has witnessed more than 298 custodial deaths since 1999 but not a single conviction of police officers during this period.
