Kavita Karkare, wife of the heroic former ATS (Anti Terrorist Squad) Chief, Hemant Karkare, who laid down his life fighting the 26/11 attacks, is no less of a hero herself. The mother of three passed away on Monday morning after suffering a brain stroke. A doctor at P.D. Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai, said her brain was completely devoid of blood supply following the haemorrhage. She was kept on ventilator till her daughters flew in from the US early on Monday.

Kavita’s children, Akash, Sui and Sayali showed great courage in deciding to donate their mother’s organs and gift new lives to three individuals. One of her kidneys went to a 48 year old man who had been fighting with dialysis over a decade now. The other went to a 59 year old man who had been waiting for transplant for the past seven years. Her liver will revive a 49 year old man who has been battling liver failure from couple of years. Kavita’s eyes were donated to Haji Bachooali Eye Bank in Parel.

In life and in death, she exemplifies strength and kindness. Kavita’s journey has been commendable. Life is worth living when you do something for someone without expecting anything in return. Kavita did that even after her life.
