SURAT – In a mock anti-terror exercise by Gujarat Police, the ‘dummy terrorists’ were made to don Muslim skullcaps, sparking outrage and anger, according to a Times of India report.

The exercise was carried out by Surat police at Dabhari near Olpad. During the drill, the special operations group (SOG) was assigned the task of nabbing ‘terrorists’ trying to enter India. After some fake firing, the ‘terrorists’ were nabbed and arms and mobiles were recovered.

“Even real terrorists do not come wearing a skull cap. Police should take care and not relate terrorism to followers of any religion. I will investigate the issue personally,” said Gujarat BJP minority cell president Mehboob Ali Chishti.

A defensive SOG Inspector B C Thakkar said, “The mock drill participants were asked to wear skull cap just to give them a different look. It was not an intentional move to relate to a specific community.” SP (Surat rural) Pradeep Sejul added, ” This should not happen.”

Speaking to the Times Now, Surat Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sejul defended the police action saying that the “stereotyping was deliberate” as the terrorists could appear in any attire.
